JOB SUMMARY

The Power Cable Technician is responsible for constructing, maintaining, operating and repairing Hydro Ottawa’s underground distribution system, particularly the installation and connection of cable and electrical equipment.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential responsibilities of the job include but are not necessarily restricted to the following:

  • Install, remove, and repair cable (RWU90, PILC, XLPE, EPR, fiber optic) in confined spaces, vaults, substations, trenches, including pole work when necessary.

  • Complete cable jointing, cable terminating and identifying, and other aspects of the cable jointing trade according to approved methods.

  • Perform live line work on the underground system following approved methods.

  • Perform all work in accordance with utility’s construction and safety standards.

  • Operate, or work in conjunction with, hydraulically operated aerial devices such as radial booms, derrick and bucket trucks, cable handler, cranes, tension machines, safety devices and equipment, voltmeter, ammeter, meg meter, cable fault tester and related equipment.

  • Perform cable testing.

  • Construct and maintain primary and secondary distribution vaults inside/outside commercial buildings.

  • Install and connect new residential single-phase meters.

  • Remove asbestos in accordance with approved practices.

  • Install, maintain, operate and repair power transformers and switchgear stations equipment.

  • Analyze GIS, P-Tech, and TC Mobile maps to verify accuracy and update accordingly.

  • Apply for work protection and hold work protection permits for Hydro Ottawa and contractors.

  • Troubleshoot, locate, and evaluate primary and secondary faults, and diagnose repairs as required, and operate related test equipment and hi-pot.

  • Coordinate work with crews, other related work groups and contractors and customers.

  • Provide on-call duties and other overtime work as required.

  • Respond to emergency situations outside of regular hours.

  • Train and mentor apprentices.

  • Responsible and accountable for short term and long term job planning and organization, including key accounts.

  • Operate and maintain assigned company vehicle, CVOR requirements, and stock and equipment as required.

  • Perform switching, grounding and phasing in close proximity to open bus primary, live front and dead front switch gears.

  • Recommend new or improved methods and techniques to improve efficiency, productivity, quality, accuracy and safety.

  • Respond to and investigate accidents/incidents involving excavator cable dig-ins on Hydro Ottawa plant and complete Damage to Plant/Work for Others folders and report findings in writing.

  • Provide detailed as-built mapping as required.

  • Ensure project paperwork such as as-built drawings, stores requisition sheets, etc., are accurate and accounted for.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Journey Person with electrical utility or relevant high voltage cable experience.

  • Ability to obtain Journeyperson Underground Power Cable Technician Certificate of Registration (MEARIE) or Journeyperson Power Line Technician with cable jointing, cable terminating and identifying and other aspects of cable joining (including experience with lead) or equivalent.

  • Certification in First Aid / CPR, forklift operation, propane, radial boom digger, WHMIS and confined space entry, traffic control is considered an asset.


 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • English essential, both oral and written. 

  • Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset.

  • Valid driver’s license –minimum Class DZ; AZ preferred.

  • Government of Canada security clearance.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.
