Job Duties of Millwright (NOC 72400)

The Millwright maintains the plant in a high degree of mechanical readiness and reliability.  The millwright works together with other mechanics and plant departments to provide process troubleshooting and problem solving to ensure productivity.

Essential functions:

  • Installing or dismantling machinery and equipment according to company plans, blueprints, and other diagrams. This will be accomplished through the safe and effective use of hoists, lift trucks, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Troubleshooting, inspecting, examining and diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic problems with associated equipment.
  • Repairing malfunctioning equipment, such as motors, pumps, valves, controls, and other machines.
  • Performing daily maintenance tasks as required. Included but not limited to repair and replacement of pumps, fans, belts, building maintenance, and valves.
  • Performing duties in boiler house and other utility support units such as water testing, chemical addition, repair of plant air leaks or breaks, maintaining of steam service to the plant.
  • Performing preventative maintenance once the machines and equipment are put into operation, as well as identifying and correcting any problems found in machines, equipment, or processes in order to facilitate production.
  • Assisting in engineering and other capital project as needed.
  • Dismantling machines by using hammers, crowbars, wrenches, and other hand or power tools.
  • Leading apprentices and directing them to ensure successful task completion.
  • Ensuring that safety policies, quality standards, and standard operating procedures are followed, in compliance with local, national, and international standards and legislation. 

Required Work Experience, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • Must have at least 5 years direct experience as a Millwright.
  • Must have demonstrated aptitude in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, schematics, drawings, manuals, and specifications.
  • Must be able to detect, isolate, and identify irregularities and malfunctions in machinery and equipment, and must be able to fabricate new parts to replace defective parts during machine setup, maintenance, or overhaul.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of load bearing capabilities of the equipment to be installed, assembled, or dismembered.
  • Must have experience in moving, assembling, disassembling, troubleshooting, and repairing various types of machinery and equipment.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring apprentices is required.
  • Familiarity with ISO quality standards is essential.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be accurate and highly analytical, and must have strong work ethic and positive team attitude.

 Required Education and Training:

  • Must have relevant education and training in a related field
  • Must be eligible for Millwright skilled trade certification
  • Skilled trade certification is an asset

 Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 100 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity required to use power and hand tools.

 Work Environment:

  • Travel may be required
  • Frequently noisy working environment.
  • Overtime as required.
