Carte International has an exciting opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic (Millwright) to join our manufacturing team to contribute to our safety-first production operations. As a member of the maintenance team, you will work closely with the Industrial Engineering, Production and Continuous Improvement teams. You will participate in team efforts to achieve department goals, complete tasks on time and according to SOP’s and regulatory requirements while minimizing downtime and advancing continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Ensure operation of machinery and mechanical equipment. Conduct routine inspections, perform preventative maintenance, repair, troubleshoot, replace, install and maintain:
- Machinery, belts and worn parts, grease, lubrication, component adjustment, and cleaning.
- Plumbing and ventilation equipment.
- Gauges, valves, and pressure regulators.
- Physical structures, including fixtures, fences, gates, and roofs.
- Electrical repairs/troubleshooting in accordance with codes, blueprints, and manuals.
- Power transmission and related components.
- Hydraulic systems, air compressors, vacuum pumps, and centrifugal pumps and high-pressure wash equipment.
- Work with preventative maintenance programs and keep detailed and accurate records.
- Operate machine tools such as lathes and grinders to fabricate the parts required during overhauls, maintenance, or set-up of machinery.
- Fabricates custom parts, fixtures and guarding by means of arc welding, grinding, oxyacetylene cutting.
- Troubleshoot and repair machinery & equipment in breakdown situations to ensure production requirements are met.
- Adhere to workplace safety policies, regulations, compliances and maintain a clean & safe working environment.
- Follow all safety precautions (i.e. lockouts) and procedures when carrying out work on equipment.
- Keep preventative maintenance schedule up to date.
- Log all updates in the Preventative Maintenance HIPPO Log.
- Fabricate repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
- Maintain and repair physical structures including fences, gates and roofs.
- Perform electrical repairs and troubleshooting in accordance with codes, blueprints, and manuals.
- Perform metal fabrication operations including layout, drilling, tapping, sawing, and grinding.
- Perform welding and flame cutting operations applicable to MIG, stick, oxy-acetylene, and plasma cutting.
- Ability to perform work at heights using scissor lift, articulated lift, and ladders.
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety and health regulations.
- Maintain a clean work environment.
- Oversee contractors with professional repairs when necessary.
- Train newly/ transferred employees.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU WILL NEED:
- Must be a valid Maintenance Millwright who is fully licensed/certified in the Province of Manitoba – Inter-Provincial Journeyman
- 1-5 years of experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with ability to maintain and repair machines and equipment.
- Proven ability to work independently, prioritize tasks with a keen sense of urgency.
- Experience and proficiency in the use of machine shop equipment, hand, power and measuring tools, and electrical and manual tools (hoists, saws, drills, etc.).
- Valid Manitoba driver’s license.
- Ability to read and follow blueprints, maintenance work orders, and repair manuals as necessary.
- Understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical applications/equipment.
- Experience in lathe and milling, electrical, welding and plumbing are considered assets.
- Successful completion of all Carte pre-screening.Successful completion of all Carte pre-screening, assessments and tests.
- Knowledge and experience with lifting equipment, such as cranes and hoists.
- Reliable, punctual and health-safety-environment conscious
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Ability to operate cranes, forklifts and aerial lifts.
- Strong familiarity with machine shop practices (lathe & milling machines); use of power tools
- Understand bearings and their functions; Must be able to read drawings and machine parts from a sketch or sample.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills
- Machinist and/or welding accreditation would be advantageous.
- Must be able to perform overtime/on-call/shift work if required.
- The unionized plant operates on a 24/5 schedule.

- Previous knowledge and experience with 5S and Lean Manufacturing considered an asset.
