Job Description

A Senior Estimator is part of the estimating team. Involved in project discussions, evaluating bid opportunities, analyzing previous projects, strategies and risk assessments the Senior Estimator has endless opportunities for advancement. The Senior Estimator works primarily under the direction of Upper Management. With the assistance of the Junior Estimator the Senior Estimator will be responsible for the evaluation of bid opportunities, preparation of cost estimates, proposals, and bid submissions.

Responsibilities and Duties

As Senior Estimator your duties will include:

  • Monitoring sources for bid opportunities
  • Responding to client RFQ’s
  • Reading and understanding Tender Documents, Contract Drawings, Specifications, and Addendums
  • Identifying project constraints, limitations and special provisions
  • Generating and submitting bid related inquiries
  • Performing material take-offs and labour allocation
  • Preparing and distributing material and sub-contractor RFQ packages
  • Strategize and plan elements of the project utilizing software including AutoCAD, MS Excel and MS Project
  • Delegate relevant tasks to Junior Estimator
  • Review Junior Estimator’s work and provide feedback
  • Prepare Lead Letters, Quote Letters, and Proposals
  • Submit Bids and Proposals to Clients, Follow-up with Clients
  • Analyze bid results, recognize trends, and develop a history to aid in future bids
  • Communicate with Project Management staff to monitor labour trends, improved techniques, etc., to continually improve estimating accuracy
  • Conduct project briefing meetings with internal Project Managers upon successful award of quoted projects
  • Transfer information to internal Project Managers pertinent to the project including; rates, sources, strategies, special provisions, schedule, agreements, inclusions, exclusions
  • Identify discrepancies between tender documents, client purchase orders and issued for construction documents to determine cost and schedule implications

Qualifications and Skills

The preferred candidate will have the following attributes:

  • A positive, can-do attitude with excellent communication skills, a willingness to learn and share new ideas
  • Organized, self-motivated, able to multi-task and manage time efficiently
  • An advanced knowledge of steel, metal fabrication, structural steel assembly, installation, and welding
  • Must be educated and proficient in AutoCAD, MS Excel, MS Word and Adobe

Preference will be given to candidates that:

  • Have a post-secondary education in Drafting, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Structural Engineering
  • Have 5 years experience in a similar role in the steel industry
